It may be brand new, but the Desert Barber Shop in Cathedral City has an old-time vibe about it. It has a classic barber pole spinning outside and comfortable leather
lounge chairs inside near two wallmounted, 50-inch, flat-screen TVs tuned to sports channels.
With free gourmet coffee, tea and soft drinks for its customers, it is a place you can hang out, catch up on sports or talk politics with its four barbers.
“We take time and pamper our customers,” said shop owner Griff Kimble, who greets people at the door as if they are long-lost relatives.
Located in the Rio Vista shopping center at Vista Chino and Landau Boulevard, the barbershop is wedged between Stater Bros. and El Corral clothing, Starbucks and Subway, but easy to find. It opened for business on Sept. 14 after months of planning. As I sipped a French roast coffee and settled into a plush red chair, I could smell Gabels Bay Rum aftershave, allegedly laced with real rum. I am old enough to remember that. Most of the barbers are older too, lured out of retirement by Kimble. They range from 24 to 46 years in the barber and hair salon trade, which gives them an amazing 155 years of combined experience. That's a lot of Burma Shave.
